Holdrege Progress, 1925

Well Known Pioneer, Mrs. J.E. Hammon Dies

Lucinda Allen was born at Mt. Pulaski, Ill., July 9, 1858 and died at her home in Atlanta October 12, 1925 at 11 P.M., aged 67 years, 3 months, and 3 days. She grew to womanhood in this vicinity and was married to J.E. Hammon on February 24, 1875. The first four children were born in Illinois and this young family in the spring of 1888 immigrated to Colorado. They were not pleased with this new country, so only stayed until fall when they started back. They visited with her sister, Mrs. Ellen Daniels at Bartley, Nebr., then with a cousin at Franklin, Nebr., and later located on a farm near Loomis. They made their home there until 1900 when they moved to Atlanta where they have since resided, first on a farm west of town and later to town when it was found necessary to do so on account of the poor health of Mrs. Hammon.

On February 24, 1925 Mr. and Mrs. Hammon celebrated their golden wedding.

Of the six children born to this union, five are living, Claude having preceded his mother in the year of 1895 at the age of 16 years, 7 months and 21 days.

The surviving children are Mrs. Lillian Hallgren of Bridgeport, Nebr., Mrs. Clara Johnston of Loomis, Frank of Atlanta, Ardell of St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. Florence Rimmer of Omaha.

The first three named were at their mother’s bedside when the end came.

Mrs. Hammon was a good wife, loving mother and a kind friend. She had been a sufferer of various afflictions for many years but bore her sufferings patiently. For several months she has been very frail and all that human hands and loving care could do was done for her. She was tenderly cared for by her husband and children. During the last ten days of her life her daughter, Lillian, came and was with her to the end.

For some time before her afflictions prevented her from studying, she was a faithful member of the Home Department of the Atlanta M.E. Sunday School.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church in Atlanta on Thursday morning, October 15, at ten o’clock conducted by the pastor, Rev. M.S. Satchel. Internment was made in Industry Cemetery.

Besides the husband and five children, those left to mourn her departure are a brother, Charles Allen, of Hoopeston, Ill., a sister, Mrs. Ellen Daniels, of Bartley, Neb., 19 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
