Mrs. Mary (commonly called Polly) Buckles died at the home of her son-in-law, Daniel Handlin, three miles southwest of Mt. Pulaski, Friday, Oct. 19, aged 85 yrs. 4 mo. 24 da. Funeral services conducted by Elder A. C. Layman, of Girard, at the Buckles Church Oct. 21. Burial Steenbergen Cem. She was the dau. of Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Birks and wa b. in Georgia, May 26, 1803. Moved to Tenn. in 1807, and then to White Co., Ill. in 1815. She married Robert Buckles in 1818 in White Co. In 1822 Mr. and Mrs. Buckles made a horseback journey to the home of her parents who had settled at some point in Missouri or Arkansas. Came to Lake Fork in the fall of 1822. Had 15 children: William R. Buckles, who d. Feb. 10, 1885; Jeremiah Buckles, who d. Oct. 11, 1885; John Buckles, living 3 miles southwest of this place; Elizabeth Ann, wife of S. M. Copeland; Lavina, first wife of L. K. Scroggin, she d. Jan. 16, 1863; Andrew Buckles, a farmer; Peter Buckles, d. Apr. 25, 1888; Calton C. Buckles, killed by lightning June 26, 1879; Mary, wife of Abner Copeland, of Iowa; Robert Buckles, who is still among us; Wiley Buckles, who d. at Champaign Sept. 1, 1888; William H. H. Buckles, of Kans; Sarah Jane, wife of Henry Freeman; Jeminma Almira, wife of W. H. Sams, of Sedan, Kans; Lucinda Margaret, wife of D. D. Handlin of this township. There are also 138 grandchildren, 125 great-grandchildren. and 7 great great grandchildren.
