SAMUEL THOMAS CURTIS

Samuel Thomas Curtis, son of Enoch and Polly Curtis, was born near Chillicothe, Ohio, December 24, 1846, and died at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois, at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 7, 1926, aged 79 years, 3 months, and 13 days. Mr. Curtis had been in failing health for some time, and was in the hospital for five weeks.

He came with his parents to Mt. Pulaski when eight years of age, and when a young man, engaged in farming south of the city until eight years ago, when he located in Springfield, Illinois to spend his declining years. He was well-known and highly respected and had many friends.

On November 1, 1870, he was united in marriage with Arminda Ellen Scroggin, of Mt. Pulaski, who preceded him in death 13 years ago. The surviving children are: Shelby E. Curtis of Mt. Pulaski; Dr. Frank Curtis of Omaha, Nebraska; Miss Lillie Curtis of Springfield, Illinois; Mrs. Frank Copeland, living eight miles south of Mt. Pulaski; and Mrs. Herbert Cook, of Southey, Saskatchewan, Canada. Two sons, Walter and Scott, preceded him in death. One sister, Mrs. Rebecca Outcelt, of Tecumseh, Oklahoma, survives. He also leaves fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mr. Curtis and daughter Miss Lillie made their home at 1814 South Sixth Street, Springfield, where funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 9, conducted by Rev. Lanty. Mrs. Melvin McCoy sang at this service. Mr. Curtis was a member of the Springfield lodge of Elks No. 128, who held impressive ceremonies at the residence. The remains were removed to Mt. Pulaski to the home of his son, Shelby E. Curtis, on South Spring Street, where funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. S. R. Reynolds, pastor of the Mt. Pulaski Christian Church. Appropriate songs were sung by a quartet composed of Miss Daisy Gruber, Miss Leona Leonard, Robert N. Jones, and Oscar W. Mayer, with Mrs. Frank Turley at the piano. The interment was in the Steenbergen cemetery, four miles southwest of Mt. Pulaski. The pallbearers were Wm. Combs, M. J. Kautz, M. J. Myers, George T. Lucas, T. A. Scroggin, and John C. England.

Relatives and friends who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Scroggin of Rock Island, Illinois; Harry L. Curtis of Hume, Missouri; Mrs. Alma Smith of Aberdeen, South Dakota; P. H. Dumphy and James McCoy of Amboy, Illinois; Herman S. Bekemeyer of Springfield; Howard McElvane of Auburn, Illinois; and Mrs. Lester Stahl of Niantic, Illinois.

Mr. Curtis was well-known as a farmer and stock raiser in Sangamon and Logan Counties. His special prided was his herds of Aberdeen Angus cattle and Percheron horses. He retired from active farming interests about eight years ago and moved to Springfield. He was an active Democrat and a member of the Elks club.
