Well Known Citizen Expires Suddenly While Walking on McLean Street

The community was shocked at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon to learn that W. D. Duff, more familiarly known as David Duff, of North McLean street, had died suddenly while on his way home from down town. Mr. Duff had been ill for several days past and although not confined to his bed nor in a seemingly dangerous condition, he was in a weakened physical condition. Friday after- noon he walked down town and was in the Gas company's office about 2 o'clock transacting some business. A little later he started home and when within less than a block of his home, in front of James E. Jewett's residence, he fell over on the sidewalk and expired while being carried into the Jewett home. Mr. Duff was one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens of Lincoln and Logan county. He was a kind father, faithful husband and valued friend. Quiet and unobtrusive, yet firm and unyielding in his convictions. His sudden death comes as a severe blow to his family, who were totally unprepared for such an event. His daughter, Mrs. Walker Pegram, of Oakville, IA, is a guest at the parental home at this time.

W. D. Duff was born in Sangamon county, Illinois, Feb. 20, 1835. He was the youngest son of Ebenezer and Sarah (McClure) Duff; the former, of Scotch- Irish descent, was born in North Carolina and reared in Kentucky, and the latter, of Scotch descent, was born in Kentucky. In the year 1828 they moved to Sangamon county, Illinois, residing there until 1855, when they removed to Logan county, where they resided until their death, Mrs. Duff dying in 1868, and Mr. Duff March 29, 1884. They were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. Our subject was reared in his native county, and came with his parents to Logan county in 1855. He settled in Aetna township and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was married March 15, 1859, to Miss Emeline H. Larison, born in Logan county, a daughter of T. J. and Catherine Ann (Hoblit) Larison. In 1866 Mr. Duff removed to his farm in East Lincoln township, which contains 320 acres of improved land.

A number of years ago the family retired from the farm and moved to a new home purchased at 428 McLean street. He was the father of eleven children - Mrs. T. L. McConnell, now deceased; John T., Charles E., James M., Mrs. Myrtle Braucher of Emporia, Kansas; Mrs. Emeline Oyler; Maud C. Duff; and Mrs. Elizabeth Pegram, of this city; Mrs. Walker Pegram, of Oakville, Iowa; and Miss Jessie Duff, now teaching in Cleveland, Ohio; and Helen, deceased.
