Carl Liesch (sic Leisch), aged 22 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Liesch of 717 West Fifth street, died at Deaconess hospital at 7 o'clock Sunday night as a result of injuries sustained last Friday morning in an explosion caused by Fourth of July celebrants.
Although his death was not unexpected, owing to his most serious condition, there had been hope that he might rally, and his death caused universal sorrow among all who knew him.
Young Liesch was standing talking to his father some 100 feet from where some boys were setting off charges of powder with as improvised cannon July 4th.
They had filled an automobile hub cap with black powder, placed an anvil over the charge, and touched it off electrically. When the fatal explosion occurred the anvil was hurled a considerable distance, and the metal hub cap struck Liesch over the heart, inflicting a mortal wound.
The heart was almost laid bare, and tree ribs were broken, causing internal injuries. Death was caused by bruising of the heart, and while Liesch held his own Friday and part of Saturday he was regarded as in a dying condition Saturday and Sunday. He was conscious until the end neared. Liesch was employed as mechanic at the M. Richardson garage.
Carl Lewis Liesch was born at Broadwell, Illinois, on November 25, 1901, and has lived in this locality all his life. He is survived by his bereaved parents, and by the following brothers and sisters: Walter E. Liesch, 623 Seventh street, Lincoln; M. A. Liesch of Springfield; Mrs. Edith R. Henderson, 502 E. Prairie St., Decatur; Ben, Ralph, Phillip and Caroline at home at 717 Fifth street. Elenore A. and Frederick O. are deceased.
The funeral will take place on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the First Christian church, with Rev. L. Hl. Hooe in charge. Burial will be in Union cemetery.
