Johannn Heinrichs Mammen was born at Harms Herum, Ostfriesland, German, Dec 23 , 1826. He was carefully educated and trained to work by his parents and was conformed in the Dutch Reformed church of his village.

In 1865 he was united in marriage with Sophia Mueller. The union was blessed with eight children four of whom died in Germany. Decedent emigrated with his family to the U.S. in 1885, lived at first at San Jose a few years, then settled on the farm south of the William Holt farm where he lived 5 or 6 years. His wife died about 17 years ago the children were grown and the family unit was broken. The children struck out boldly for themselves and have become prominent farmers and citizens.

Uncle John, as he was familiarly known, had made his home with his son, Chris G. Mammen and family near San. Jose. About three weeks ago he was taken seriously ill from diabetes or kidney trouble and age being against him he declined rapidly and Monday morning Dec 4, about 5 o'clock he fell asleep in the arms of death at the home of his son, Chris.

Funeral occurred on Wednesday, Dec 6, at 11 a.m. from the German M.E. church. Rev W/H/ Traeger officiated and pronounced a memorable eulogy based upon the text, Gen. 24:56, and made a very practical application to our daily life. The floral contributions were beautiful and emblematic of the occasion. A quintet sang appropriate hymns and a large attendance of relatives and friends were present.

Those who mourn the departure of their aged father and all of whom were present are Mr. and Mrs. Geo.. A. Koehler and daughter, Mrs. H. Ahrens, OF Washington, Ia.; George Mammen of Chillicothe, Mo.,; Mr.and Mrs. John G. Mammen and children of Emden; Mr. and Mrs. Christ G. Mammen and children, of San Jose, and other immediate relatives and many friends.

J.H. Hallman, mortician; auto conveyance. Pallbearers were Henry Kramer, John Siuts, Jacob Mayer, J.H. Rademaker, Meno Eeten and Geo. Alberts.

Burial at Hartsburg Union cemetery. San Jose, Hartsburg and Delavan folks were in Attendance.
