The death of Sherman R. Smith, 74, 110 Butler street, lifelong resident of Lincoln and for 53 years an employe of the Union Cemetery association, occurred at 8:45 o'clock Sunday morning at Deaconess hospital. Mr. Smith had been a hospital patient for the past two weeks preparing for an operation.
Mr. Smith was born in Lincoln, October 3, 1862 and for the last 26 years was superintendent of Union cemetery.
Union cemetery was his pride and he possessed an unusual devotion to his work. This was best shown several years ago when his first vacation in years, was spent visiting numerous cemeteries throughout the state and upon his return he laid out the new cemetery addition, south of Stringer avenue.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, William and Joseph Smith, and one daughter, Mrs. Richard Hauffe, all of Lincoln. He also leaves six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Brothers and sisters are, Mrs. Sarah Prince, Peoria; Mrs. Allie Sheley, Samuel, Charles, Louis and Frank Smith, Lincoln; Mrs. Frances Oglevie (sic), Middletown and Mrs. Lizzie Patterson, Tulsa, Okla.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian church, in charge of Rev. C. M. Stults and Rev. L. H. Hooe, the later of Bloomington. He was a member of Lincoln Lodge No. 914 B.P.O. Elks and the lodge will provide pallbearers and conduct services at the grave in Union cemetery.
The body will remain at the Goff Funeral Home until time for the services at the church.
